Background of the Study
Pediatric asthma is a chronic respiratory condition that affects millions of children worldwide. In Nigeria, including Kebbi State, asthma is a major cause of morbidity and hospitalization among children (Olamide et al., 2024). Asthma can be triggered by allergens, environmental pollutants, respiratory infections, and other factors, making its management complex and requiring continuous care. Nurses play a crucial role in the management of pediatric asthma by providing education, administering medications, and ensuring proper monitoring of the condition.
Despite the known importance of nursing interventions, there are limited studies on the specific role of nurses in the management of pediatric asthma in Kebbi State. Nurses’ responsibilities in asthma care include educating parents about asthma triggers, promoting adherence to treatment regimens, and assisting in the prevention of asthma attacks. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in managing pediatric asthma in Kebbi State and identify strategies to improve asthma care for children.
Statement of the Problem
Pediatric asthma remains a significant health challenge in Kebbi State, with a high prevalence among children. Despite the existence of healthcare services, the management of asthma remains suboptimal due to gaps in nursing care, lack of specialized asthma management education, and inadequate access to medications (Ibrahim & Ahmed, 2024). Nurses are often the primary caregivers, yet their role in asthma management is not fully understood or optimized.
This study aims to assess the role of nurses in managing pediatric asthma in Kebbi State, examine the challenges they face, and propose strategies for improving asthma management.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the role of nurses in managing pediatric asthma in Kebbi State.
2. To identify the challenges nurses face in providing asthma care for children.
3. To propose strategies for improving pediatric asthma management by nurses in Kebbi State.
Research Questions
1. What role do nurses play in managing pediatric asthma in Kebbi State?
2. What challenges do nurses face in the management of pediatric asthma?
3. What strategies can be implemented to improve pediatric asthma care by nurses?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses play a significant role in managing pediatric asthma in Kebbi State.
2. Lack of specialized training and resources hinders nurses' ability to effectively manage pediatric asthma.
3. Implementing targeted training programs will improve pediatric asthma management by nurses.
